Tank containers and tankers
When volumes are high, the package becomes the vehicle. An ISO tank holds about 20,000–26,000 L and can carry many dangerous goods that a flexitank cannot. Cleaning between loads and tank availability drive the cost.
Main types
| T1–T23 | Portable tank (UN instruction) | UN portable tank instructions set the design for each dangerous good. |
|---|---|---|
| ISO tank | 20 ft tank container | Stainless vessel in a frame; moves by ship, rail and road. |
| Tanker | Road tanker or rail tank car | Dedicated or multi-compartment vehicles for regional bulk. |
What to decide
- Volume per shipment: tanks pay off when the receiver can unload a full load at once.
- Heating, insulation or pressure rating for the product.
- Cleaning certificate and the previous cargo.
Inspection and handling
- Check the tank's periodic test dates on the data plate and the cleaning certificate before loading.
Rules to watch
- Portable tank provisions in the UN Model Regulations and the IMDG Code.
- Road and rail tank rules (for example ADR/RID in Europe, 49 CFR in the US).
