Intermodal bulk
A flexitank or container liner removes the drums and IBCs altogether: one single-use bag fills a 20-foot container. It cuts packaging per tonne sharply, but the container, the loading and the product must all suit it.
Main types
| Flexitank | Liquid bulk bag for a 20 ft container | Non-hazardous liquids: food oils, latex, some chemicals. |
|---|---|---|
| Dry liner | Dry bulk container liner | Grains, resins and powders loaded by blower or tipping. |
What to decide
- Whether the product is permitted in a flexitank at all; most dangerous goods are not.
- Container condition, bulkhead, and the surge loads of rail and road transport.
- Discharge method and heating for viscous products.
Inspection and handling
- Inspect the container floor, walls and doors before installing the bag.
Rules to watch
- Flexitank industry codes of practice and rail impact testing expectations.
