FIBCs and bulk bags
A flexible intermediate bulk container moves 500 to 2,000 kg of dry product and folds flat when empty. The main engineering question is static electricity: which bag type is safe for your product and the atmosphere around the filling point.
Main types
| Type A | Plain fabric | No static protection. Only where no flammable dust or vapour is present. |
|---|---|---|
| Type B | Low breakdown voltage fabric | Prevents propagating brush discharges; not for flammable vapour. |
| Type C | Conductive, must be grounded | Safe only when connected to earth during filling and emptying. |
| Type D | Static dissipative, no ground | Dissipates charge by corona; must be kept clean and dry. |
What to decide
- Bag type A–D, matched to the product's minimum ignition energy and the surrounding zone.
- Safe working load and safety factor: single-trip or multi-trip.
- Inner liner, baffles for a squarer shape, and top and bottom spouts.
Inspection and handling
- Check lifting loops, seams and the label for safe working load before every lift.
- For Type C, verify the ground connection before product flows.
Rules to watch
- Electrostatic requirements for FIBCs (IEC 61340-4-4) and combustible dust guidance at your site.
