Pails, jerricans and small packs
Small industrial packs carry coatings, adhesives, lubricants and samples where a drum is too much. They are filled and moved by hand, so weight, closures and stacking matter more than freight cube.
Main types
| 1A2 / 1H2 | Open-head steel or plastic pail | Pastes, coatings and solids; lid with ring or tear strip. |
|---|---|---|
| 3A1 / 3H1 | Steel or plastic jerrican | Pourable liquids through a screw cap or spout. |
| 4G | Fibreboard box, combination pack | Bottles or cans inside one tested outer box. |
What to decide
- Weight one person can lift safely when the pack is full.
- Closure type and tamper evidence for the product and route.
- Stack strength on a pallet, especially plastic in warm warehouses.
Inspection and handling
- Check lids, gaskets and spouts for damage before filling.
- Plastic packs for dangerous goods can have a limited permitted service period; confirm the rule that applies.
Rules to watch
- Combination-pack testing for dangerous goods under the UN Model Regulations.
- Recycled-content and recyclability rules for plastic packaging.
