Collapsible bulk containers and plastic bulk boxes
Rigid plastic bulk boxes run in closed loops between a supplier and a plant. They fold or nest when empty, so the return trip costs a fraction of the outbound one. Their economics depend on how reliably they come back.
Main types
| Pallet box | Solid-wall plastic pallet box | Parts, produce and granules; cleanable and stackable. |
|---|---|---|
| Foldable | Collapsible bulk container | Walls fold down to a fraction of the height for return. |
| Liquid fold | Foldable IBC with liner | Rigid fold-flat outer with a single-use bag for liquids. |
What to decide
- Trips per year and loss rate: a reusable box that does not come back costs more than a one-way pack.
- Fold ratio and return freight versus the cost of washing and tracking.
- Pooling service versus owning the fleet.
Inspection and handling
- Check latches, hinges and base runners before each trip.
Rules to watch
- Reuse targets for transport packaging under the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation.
