FIBC vs. Gaylord

Two ways to move a pallet of dry material, with different handling and different empties.

FIBC bulk bag

Woven bag with lifting loops

Gaylord bulk box

Corrugated box on a pallet footprint

Side by side

FIBC bulk bagGaylord bulk box
Typical usePowders, granules, resins, aggregatesParts, regrind, granules, general dry material
Relative capacityPallet-scale, shaped by the bag and the loadPallet footprint, height set by the box
HandlingLifted by loops from a hoist or forklift boomHandled as a normal pallet load
DischargeSpout discharge, or cut open depending on typeTipped, scooped, or bottom-discharge styles
Empty volumeFolds flat; very low empty volumeShips and stores flat before set-up
Reusable potentialSome types are built for multiple trips; many are single tripMulti-wall boxes can take several trips in dry conditions
MaterialWoven polypropylene, with liners where neededMulti-wall corrugated, with liners where needed
SanitationLiners are common; bag reuse depends on the material carriedLiner-dependent; board is not washable
Common industriesChemical, food ingredients, plastics, mineralsManufacturing, plastics, recycling, distribution
AdvantagesVery low empty volume; good for flowable solidsSimple pallet handling; no hoist needed
LimitationsNeeds lifting equipment and dust and static considerationVulnerable to moisture and rough repeated handling

FIBC bulk bag — When this makes sense

  • The material flows and can be discharged through a spout
  • A hoist or boom is available at both ends
  • Empty storage and return space is tight

Gaylord bulk box — When this makes sense

  • The contents are parts or irregular solids
  • Only standard pallet handling is available
  • The material is loaded and unloaded by hand or by tipping
